Cycling to Work: TBU Staff Covered over 13,600 Kilometres in May

Tomas Bata University in Zlín once again took part in the nationwide Cycling to Work challenge this year, an initiative promoting sustainable modes of transport. During the May campaign, 94 TBU employees joined the challenge, forming a total of 35 teams across various constituent parts and covering an impressive 13,666 kilometres together.

The campaign aims to encourage participants to opt for non-motorised transport methods – whether walking, cycling, or using a scooter. The performance of TBU staff was truly inspiring:

27 individuals did not miss a single day, and another 63 maintained a regularity rate above 60%. The top-performing woman cycled 602 km, while the leading man clocked an incredible 1,085 km. The team with the highest mileage recorded a total of 1,797.7 km over the course of May.

“I’m truly proud of our employees. It’s great to see so many people engaging in the challenge with such enthusiasm. For me, this is yet more proof that sustainability at TBU is not just a trendy term but a daily commitment,” said Martina Juříková, Vice-Rector for Internal and External Relations.

By embracing sustainable travel, participants made a significant contribution to environmental protection. The emissions saved equate to, for example, the annual consumption of a household or five return car journeys from Prague to Lisbon.

The awards ceremony took place on 4 June 2025 and included a presentation of activities focused on sustainable consumption. Attendees were able to enjoy Fairtrade coffee and refreshments prepared by Líska, a non-profit organisation that has become TBU’s new partner this year in the fields of sustainability and environmental education.

Tomas Bata University has long supported ecological initiatives. It is encouraging to see that staff not only actively participate in such challenges, but many of them regularly choose environmentally friendly transport – well beyond the campaign itself.
