Faculty of Technology to Become the First Technical Faculty in the CR to Offer a Degree in Radiography

The Faculty of Technology at Tomas Bata University in Zlín has obtained accreditation for a new Bachelor’s programme in Radiography. This degree course is typically offered by medical or healthcare faculties in the Czech Republic – accreditation at a technically oriented faculty is therefore highly exceptional and marks the very first case of its kind in the country.

The establishment of the new degree programme was initiated by the management board of the Zlín Regional Authority in response to a critical shortage of specialists in this area. “Over the past ten years, the workload of radiographers in the Zlín Region – as measured by the number of procedures – has increased by 47 percent. This represents above-average growth nationally, while the number of specialists in our region remains below average. A major concern is also the average age of current professionals in this field. Up to one fifth of them may retire over the next decade, so we urgently need to increase the number of graduates,” explained Radim Holiš, Governor of the Zlín Region and regional healthcare lead.

“Securing accreditation for the Radiography degree programme at the Faculty of Technology is a remarkable achievement, and it confirms Tomas Bata University’s commitment to addressing the needs of the region. It also shows that our investments in faculty development and cooperation with the Zlín Regional Authority are producing tangible, long-term benefits,” added Milan Adámek, TBU Rector.

Radiography is a profession that bridges healthcare and technology. “Much of the knowledge students need comes from the natural sciences – physics, mathematics and biology – as well as a thorough understanding of diagnostic and imaging methods, working with equipment and modern technologies. These are precisely the areas where our Faculty of Technology has a strong and well-established background. Clinical and practical training, specialist medical course units, and topics such as patient communication and psychology will be provided by our partners – particularly Tomas Bata Regional Hospital and other professional institutions from the Zlín and South Moravian Regions. Thanks to this collaboration, we are able to offer modern, high-quality education in a field that is vital for both our region and the country,” said Roman Čermák, Dean of the Faculty of Technology at TBU.

As part of its cooperation with the university, the Zlín Regional Authority has also supported the construction of a new building for the Faculty of Technology with a contribution of CZK 200 million. This exceptional investment from the Regional Authority was conditional upon the university launching new programmes that respond directly to regional needs. In addition to Radiography, these will include programmes such as Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Gastronomy and Nutrition, and Semiconductor Materials. “The new building, which is being constructed directly opposite the current faculty, will provide modern laboratory facilities and the necessary capacity for this and other new degree programmes. Together with our existing premises, it will form a fully functional unit that will significantly enhance our teaching and research capabilities. Completion is scheduled for 2026,” Dean Roman Čermák added.

Applicants interested in studying Radiography will be able to apply this autumn through the standard admissions process. The first students will begin their studies in September 2026.
