Students and Staff at TBU in Zlín Can Now Adopt a Plant
16. June 2025What began as a modest idea from four students at the Faculty of Management and Economics (FaME) at Tomas Bata University in Zlín has swiftly grown into a green community revolution. The Adopt a Plant project has engaged dozens of students and staff in caring for plants throughout Faculty spaces, proving that even a simple initiative can significantly improve both the environment and relationships on campus.
The founders of the project – Tereza Maitnerová, Natalia Jenisová, Natálie Olešová and Martina Špániková – set out to brighten up various corners of the FaME building. They placed potted plants around the premises, each marked with a QR code. Students and staff can scan the code to “adopt” a plant and take on responsibility for its regular care.
“We believe that even a small change can make a big difference. Plants lift your mood, purify the air, and make the environment more pleasant. And above all, when you take care of something, it makes you feel better too,” says Tereza Maitnerová, one of the project’s founders.
The initiative quickly caught on. The corridors have been equipped with stylish watering cans, “adoptive parents” proudly share their plant-care success stories, and students post photos of their green companions on social media. The project has evolved into not only an environmental, but also a community-driven effort.
The students are continuing to expand their activities. They now offer help with watering and replanting office plants, and help revive ailing greenery. They plan to bring the project to other faculties at Tomas Bata University as well.
“Adopt a Plant is not just about flowers – it’s about care, connection, and taking an active interest in your surroundings,” says Natalia Jenisová.
