Voluntary Practical Laboratory Classes to Be Held at the Faculty of Technology

Additional voluntary laboratory classes that will enable students to catch up on the much-needed practice have been prepared at the Faculty of Technology of Tomas Bata University in Zlín after the pandemic had limited the students’ access to classes at higher education institutions. The event has surpassed expectations with a fantastic level of interest. More than three hundred students have signed up for the classes.

“After completing the classes, participants will receive a certificate, thanks to which they can prove to prospective employers that they attended laboratory classes in person even during the coronavirus pandemic, which in the end can give them a certain advantage on the labour market,” explains Martin Bednařík, Vice-Dean for Pedagogical Activities in Bachelor’s Studies at the Faculty of Technology.

The voluntary laboratory classes include diverse topics which are based on 23 course units taught across individual years. Students can focus, for example, on the analysis of cosmetic raw materials, rubber technologies, food production technologies or microbiology.

Tobiáš Valachovič, a student of Polymer Materials and Technologies who has signed up for the laboratory classes focused on inorganic chemistry explains: “I must confess that when I was working with laboratory glass for the first time, I felt like a bull in a china shop, because I attend part-time mode of study. Due to the restrictions, the laboratories were closed, and progressing to the following year without practical training is pointless, so I did not hesitate for a moment.”

The voluntary practical training is not the only activity of this type offered by the TBU Faculty of Technology. An Open Day intended for applicants for studies in the degree programme in Process Engineering was held in June; the popular event entitled “Researchers’ Night” which aims to raise public awareness about science is being prepared by the academic staff, to take place in September.
