Zlin Design Week is About to Start
4. May 2022Conferences, exhibitions, workshops, parties. Students, inspiring personalities and those who just want to explore the world of design. For the 8th time the Zlin Design Week festival is fast approaching – follow design and experience it for yourself from May 6 to 13 2022.
During the second week of May, Zlín traditionally becomes a meeting point for all those who are involved in the world of design and those who are about to explore it. From May 6 to 13, it will be no different – after two hybrid years, Zlin Design Week returns in full force. “Miriam van der Lubbe, Creative Director of Dutch Design Week, recently said that designers are now more than ever influencing our future and can change the world for the better. This is a huge opportunity and responsibility – which is why we want to be a platform where such possibilities can be openly discussed. And to support those who can contribute to such change,” comments Jitka Smolíková, the festival’s director.
This is also why Zlin Design Week embarked on a two-year-long exploration of topics related to universal design. Visitors will have the opportunity to view it from different perspectives this year and beyond – either at the Conference (Monday, May 9), featuring speakers such as Rama Gheerawo, Ivelina Gadzheva or Design and Architecture Norway, or at one of the workshops. During these workshops, Rama Gheerawo and Ivelina Gadzheva will present the development of creative leadership and methods of inclusive design in the context of the war in Ukraine (Wednesday, May 11), Herman Freng Billett, student of strategic design from Norway, will share his experience on how design can be used to connect generations (Wednesday, May 11) and Google will provide skills development on design thinking as part of its New Generation of Founders programme (Friday, May 13).
On Friday May 6, the opening of the exhibition 100 Years of Zlín Design will take place, which will highlight the phenomenon of Zlín’s industrial design. Another opening will be held on Saturday May 7 – the Best in Design Best of ’22 exhibition in the G18 gallery will be opened by a discussion with the finalists and judges of the 13th edition of this international competition. Then you should join the Opening Ceremony of the whole festival later on that day, which also brings the Police Symphony Orchestra and singer Barbara Mochowa to Zlín.
The Design CANTEEN will for the first time become an offline space for meetings, networking and discussions. New impulses will await you also at the exhibitions Long Life and They Wrote It on the Internet which are dealing with topics of fake news, media literacy and design that reflects the phenomenon of an ageing society.
The festival is organized by the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín and with the support of the EEA and Norway Grants, the City of Zlín and the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
