TBU Research Unit Has Launched the Production of “Anti-COVID” Disinfectant

2 April 2020 | The production of disinfection Anti-COVID has been launched at the Centre of Polymer Systems of Tomas Bata University in Zlín. For this purpose, TBU has obtained 5 thousand litres of ethanol from the state this week. The disinfectant solution that is in high demand these days is prepared following the recipe recommended by the World Health Organization.

Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Czech Republic faces a shortage of disinfectants and sanitizers. TBU has launched the production of disinfectants today in accordance with a special permission granted by the Ministry of Health.

“The solution contains ethanol, demineralised water, glycerol and hydrogen peroxide,” describes Martina Pummerová from the Centre of Polymer Systems.

The production of the Anti-COVID solution is quite a quick process. The staff in charge are able to prepare at least 100 litres of the solution per hour and approximately 1,000 litres per day.

“We are discussing the distribution of the solution with the representatives of the Statutory Town of Zlín as well as of the Zlín Region. The Town will take 1,000 litres of the disinfectant solution per week and the Zlín Region will take 3,000 litres per week. The solution will also be available for commercial entities at a cost price,” said Prof. Sedlařík, TBU Rector.

Tomas Bata University in Zlín is taking significant action against the spread of Coronavirus. It has produced more than 1,000 litres of disinfectant hand gel and has distributed the gels to the organizations in need. In cooperation with the Spur a.s. company, it has developed a special nanomaterial that is able to offer protection from catching Coronavirus.

“Face masks made from this material are sewn in the Fashion Design studio of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications. TBU has donated these masks to stomatologists and paramedics, for example. Students of the Faculty of Humanities offer their help and assistance in hospitals in the Zlín Region,” said Ms Petra Svěráková, spokesperson of TBU.
