TBU Will Offer a New Degree Programme to Students
24. February 2022The Faculty of Management and Economics is getting set to launch a brand new Bachelor’s programme in Sports Management. Activities related to accreditation process began in February, and the first students are expected at the Faculty in the 2024-25 academic year. In so doing the TBU has responded to demand in the labour market for professionals with economics qualifications tailored towards working as a manager of a sports club.
“Sport is clearly a big deal today, and managers of sports clubs are expected to be true professionals. They require knowledge of economic and managerial matters, and have to learn to communicate in public spaces. Studying for the degree will smooth the way for future managers to enter the arena of sport, as well as supporting their further development,” stated guarantor Jiří Bejtkovský, Ph.D. about the profile of future graduates.
During the planning stage of the degree programme, the TBU is expected to cooperate closely with the Zlín Regional Authority, the municipality of Zlín, secondary schools and regional sports clubs.
Prof. Vladimír Sedlařík, the Rector of the TBU, commented that “By doing this we will bolster the social, or the third role, of the University significantly, and reinforce its position in the region.”
Prof. Ing. David Tuček, Ph.D., Dean of the FaME, explained that “The Faculty shall put on course units for teaching economics, management and the marketing of sport, while the Faculty of Humanities will pass on knowledge of kinanthropology, the physiology of stress and subsequent sports training.”
Students can look forward to attending fascinating classes that shall comprise economics, marketing, management, psychology, mental coaching, self-development, and physiology and law relating to sport. Future graduates of the course can go on to find employment as the managers of sports organizations or coaches and leaders of teams and individual athletes.
Mgr. Zdeněk Melichárek, Ph.D., Head of the Department of Physical Training, expressed his delight at the course: “…as it goes hand in hand with the University’s plan to build new sports facilities to cater for students and the needs of sports. We believe young people interested in sport, who we have been educating since they were children, will no longer have to leave Zlín to pursue a balance of sport and study.”
With the preparation and subsequent implementation of the new degree programme, the Faculty thus builds, besides other activities, on the already implemented research related to the population testing regarding sports activities or the development of specialized equipment for disabled athletes. These include, for example, projects funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR) and focused on the development of equipment for different types of sports (sledge hockey, cycling, javelin or ball throw). All the above-mentioned projects have found application in practice, and the products have been really used by disabled athletes. They are even being considered for use at the Paralympics.
