Faculty of Applied Informatics Strengthens High-Tech Cooperation with Japan Through Erasmus+

Long-term scientific cooperation between the Faculty of Applied Informatics at Tomas Bata University in Zlín and the prestigious The University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo has recently gained further momentum thanks to the European Erasmus+ KA171 programme. As part of the initiative, four academic staff members from Zlín completed an educational and technological mobility stay in Japan in mid-May 2026.

The visit followed a series of important exchange activities. At the turn of 2025 and 2026, a student from Tokyo completed a four-month internship at the Faculty of Applied Informatics outside the Erasmus framework. This was followed in early March 2026 by a visit to Zlín from three colleagues from the Japanese partner university under the Erasmus+ KA171 programme. The recent visit of Czech researchers to Japan therefore represents another strategic step in this rapidly developing academic partnership.

During their stay in Japan, representatives of the university took part in an intensive programme combining teaching activities, professional collaboration and discussions with students. The lectures and seminars focused on the latest trends in IT and the digital transformation of industry. Topics included the use of blockchain technologies to ensure data trustworthiness in Industry 4.0 and 5.0, the integration of artificial intelligence into cybersecurity, and the challenges quantum computing poses to current cryptographic standards. The programme also covered practical software development through Clean Code principles and modern web and mobile architectures. An important part of the visit was a trip to the historic city of Nagasaki, organised in cooperation with Rotary International, which created space for discussions on the responsibility of science and technology in shaping the future of society.

A key element of the partnership remains its strong emphasis on student exchanges and the development of applied research. During their stay in Tokyo, the Czech academics also met two students from the Faculty of Applied Informatics who are currently undertaking a three-month professional internship at the Japanese university. In return, a two-month placement for a Japanese student at the faculty in Zlín is also planned as part of the ongoing mobility activities. All of these exchanges are funded through the Erasmus+ KA171 programme.

The international reputation of the Zlín faculty was further highlighted through expert discussions surrounding a patent developed by the Department of Informatics and Artificial Intelligence, which was successfully presented at Expo 2025 Osaka and is expected to open the door to further future innovations.
