Refurbished Rooms and a New Gym – Renovated U12 Hall of Residence
11. September 2025Students of the TBU have been moving into the recently renovated U12 building since the start of the winter semester. Repairs to its accommodation section took place during the summer months. In addition to refurbished rooms and new equipment, it now houses a gym for residents. The costs of the renovation, including fixtures and fittings, amounted to CZK 45 million.
Michal Navrátil, Director of the HRR at the TBU, commented “The price for accommodation has gone up by about 7%, after a gap of two years.” Increases in running costs and energy prices were the reason, yet all the rooms were taken very quickly. Rents now range from CZK 4,200 to 7,290, depending on the services provided. Although the various halls of residence contain 1,159 beds, 360 applicants remain on the waiting list.

“There is consistently high interest in accommodation,” added Michal Navrátil, “which significantly exceeds the available capacity. Sadly, this means there are no rooms available for several hundred students.”

This represents a challenging situation for the University and those attending it, especially for people from far away who move to the city, where no affordable housing otherwise exists. A lack of beds in the halls of residence often means seeking out more expensive private residences, placing a significant financial burden on the affected students. This is why a major priority is to further expand options for accommodation at the TBU.

At present, the University has housing facilities within seven buildings situated near the city centre. Thanks to their convenient location, residents of them have good access to the TBU’s buildings and to the city’s key services and transport network.
