TBU Held an Opening Ceremony for the Renovated Refectory

After three months of work, the University held an opening ceremony for the renovated central Refectory on 20 October 2023. The cost of the reconstruction work amounted to CZK 20,000,000.

The previously used gastro equipment was no longer meeting the operational technical requirements; therefore, a completely new concept of the catering facility was designed.

“The facility is now equipped with a new ventilation system, wiring system, water distribution system and heating. The renovation works included creating a new layout of the facility. The current central Refectory has new gastronomic equipment and more comfortable facilities for the staff,” described Bc. Michal Navrátil, Director of the Halls of Residence and Refectory.

The central TBU Refectory thus meets higher standards and has been equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Emphasis was placed on functional, modern and aesthetic equipment reflecting the current trends in catering, thus allowing for faster dispensing of meals and more efficient use of space.

“The total cost of the renovation and modernization of the Refectory amounted to CZK 20,000,000, of which CZK 9,400,000 were paid from the programme funding provided by the MEYS, and the remaining amount was covered from the University’s own resources,” said Prof. Milan Adámek, Rector of TBU.

The renovation period of several months was very difficult, especially because the Refectory had to provide catering services to thousands of diners during that time, in a situation where the serving and dining capacity was significantly reduced.

“All staff members of the Refectory were certainly pushed to the limit of their abilities. I would like to thank them and also the diners for their patience and understanding in this extraordinary situation,” said Bc. Michal Navrátil, Director of the HRR.

In connection with this project, the roof was repaired, cabling was modified for a new food ordering system, which is in preparation. In the dining hall, the floor covering was completely replaced and lights were replaced partially.

The central Refectory was put into operation after renovation in 2001, and, from then until 2023, the Refectory served meals to three and a half million diners. On average, over 100,000 meals are prepared here per year; the number of lunches served in 2023 should be as high as 145,000.
