TBU Launches Own Production of Antibacterial Gel

Face masks and disinfectants sold out due to coronavirus. Such is the current situation on the market due to the risk of infection with a novel coronavirus. Tomas Bata University in Zlín has developed its own know-how for the production of antibacterial gels. Thanks to the Technology Transfer Centre, the production takes place in the so-called clean rooms.

“Currently, there is an enormous demand for disinfectants. We have, therefore, decided to resume the production of antibacterial gel, a product registered by the Ministry of Health in 2014. We are also authors of the relevant know–how,” said Prof. Ing. Vladimír Sedlařík, Ph.D., Rector of TBU.

Thus, the main goal of the Technology Transfer Centre is being fulfilled, as the Centre has been established in order to link basic and applied research. They are able to produce almost 500 litres of gel per day.

The main component of the fast-acting antibacterial gel is alcohol. Moreover, it contains a small amount of demineralized water, a substance responsible for the gel consistency of the product, preservative and glycerine.

The effectiveness of the product is almost 100%. “It reliably destroys bacteria, viruses and mould and can be used for common hand disinfection and for professional health purposes,” added Ing. Tomáš Sáha, Ph.D. from the Technology Transfer Centre.

The University’s management also plans to donate these antibacterial gels to children’s homes and to senior citizens’ homes. TBU has also been closely collaborating with an external company that has expressed an interest in the know-how for the production of antibacterial gel.

In the context of the risk of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection, the Zlín-based university has adopted preventive measures this week such as a ban on travels of students and staff to countries affected by coronavirus or a suspension of mobility of international students and staff coming from those countries. Until further notice, all conferences, sporting and cultural events have been cancelled. Classes scheduled to be held within the University of the Third Age have been cancelled as well.
