Recognition of Higher Education and Qualifications Acquired Abroad

Procedure of recognizing higher education and qualifications acquired abroad:

  • The person who has completed higher education abroad (at foreign university) – a.k.a “YOU” –  shall submit a written request including all the compulsory formalities (see below).
  • Applicants for Bachelor´s study need to Recognize their Secondary school education which is not done by Universities, but in totally different processes by local Czech District offices who oversee Secondary school in Czech republic – that Recognition process is called Nostrification – for further info and process click here)
  • Applicants for Master´s and Doctoral study – If the previously studied degree programme and course is not similar enough to any programme offered for study at TBU in Zlín (you may search all study courses offered by UTB here) in that case you need to find different university in Czech republic with similar study programme to one that you want to Recognize – Click here and then on STEP 2 .
  • Applicants who studied same or similar study programme and course to the one which UTB offers, may apply for Recognition directly with our university. The others have to use previous link to continue the procedure on their own.
  • The request to our university MUST be submitted in paper form to the address of Rectorate of TBU in Zlín:

  • The Rectorate of TBU in Zlín shall verify formal requirements of the request.
  • TBU shall assess the request, compare the degree programmes and issue a decision on the request.
  • In the event that Rector grants the request, he shall issue the decision and an appendix to the decision entitled “Proof of Recognition of Higher Education and Qualifications Acquired Abroad Issued in the Czech Republic”. The decision along with the appendix and the original documents shall be delivered to the addressee only.   • In the event that Rector rejects the request, his decision shall be delivered to the addressee only.
  • Rector of TBU in Zlín shall decide on the Recognition of higher education and qualifications acquired abroad within period specified in general regulation on administrative procedure *) (i.e. within 30 days of delivery, or within 60 days in difficult cases – if the Recognition request includes all necessary documents in necessary quality, otherwise the process is paused and the Requestee (you) is asked to deliver documents in appropriate quality).
  • Higher education and qualifications acquired abroad, its part or particular examinations are valid on the territory of the Czech Republic from the date, on which the decision on the recognition of higher education and qualifications acquired abroad comes into force.

The request must include:

The written request of the person who has completed higher education abroad must include:

  • First name and surname of the person who has completed education at a higher education institution abroad,
  • date, month, year and place of birth of the applicant,
  • nationality,
  • permanent address,
  • address, to which the recognition decision shall be sent,
  • title of the higher education institution (school) at which the previous education which you want to Recognize was completed, its address (town/city and country),
  • date of start and completion of studies,
  • title of the completed degree programme in the Czech language,
  • title of the completed degree course in the Czech language,
  • date of submission and signature of the person who completed education at a higher education institution abroad (if the request is submitted by a proxy for the person who has completed higher education abroad, s/he is obliged to submit an officially verified power of attorney signed by the person who has completed higher education abroad),
  • and the purpose for which the applicant requests the recognition (whether s/he requests it in order to pursue other further studies or for the purposes of employment in the Czech Republic).

Enclosures, namely:

  • Officially verified original or an officially verified copy of final Diploma, certificate or similar proof of due completion of studies issued by a higher education institution abroad,
  • Officially verified original or an officially verified copy of the Diploma Supplement or the listing of the completed course units (Final Transcript of Records),
    What does it mean – “officially verified” – authenticity of signatures and official stamps on the original documents must be officially verified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country, in which the university that has issued the document resides, or by the relevant foreign body and after that by the relevant diplomatic mission of the Czech Republic(a.k.a. Embassy of Czech republic in that Country), if not specified otherwise in the international agreement.
    What minimal OFFICIAL VERIFICATION you need accordingly to a country from where you have your Diploma which you need to Recognize – you can find in List of countries – available here (click on “Stáhnout” button).
  • IF you will not have your documents verified to this level which belongs to the Country where you have received your previous education – it will not be considered valid enough to be recognizable by Czech republic.
  • Certified translation of both such documents into the Czech or English language (if not in English already = English is enough)
  • If the request is submitted by a different person than the person who has completed higher education abroad (you) – then this person needs to submit will all above documents also an “Power of attorney” document signed by you giving him/her right to represent you in matters connected with Request for Recognition of your education.
  • Proof of payment of the fee for actions related to the procedure followed when receiving a request for the recognition of higher education and qualifications acquired abroad: CZK 3,000/EUR 115.
    • Make sure that you instruct your bank to keep all bank transfer fees and costs on your side, so the exact sum of CZK 3000 or its equivalent in EUR arrives at the UTB bank account.

Variable code and specific codes are necessary for identification of payment! – IF your bank doesn´t have in its bank transfer mode fields like that – please add this information (Variable code + NOSTRIFIKACE + “Your name”) to any other field during payment procedure which informs receiver (Tomas Bata University) about Purpose of payment (Variable code) and Identity of the person who paid it. So you can add this info to any fieds as – Payment detail, Payment Info, Info for receiver, etc. IF your payment will not include this information then it will be very hard to identify it by our university accountants´office.
